HOW TO VOLUNTEER

How To Apply

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with SOSAEC HAITI. We hope you can find here a fulfilling and dynamic learning experience.
Our volunteer program has a well established structure, which helps each volunteer to develop different skills and very familiar with their own personal and professional development, by supporting actions that he or she performs.
The program welcomes people of all ages, sexes, vocational and educational levels, who wish to be linked to the social impact actions we take, as part of the core activities of the organization.
We seek people with a sense of social responsibility, warm and responsible, who want to make their contribution to the world.
Once you have made the decision to go inspire and empower others the process is easy! Simply follow the steps below and you will be settling in to a different culture before you know it:

2. Once your choices have been confirmed, read the  Terms and Conditions.
If you agree to these, request and fill in the application form. (please

Volunteers usually meet with the Project Leaders during their first 2 days in order to discuss how  would ideally like their money to be used. This allows volunteers to voice individual interests they have or specific areas they would like to be involved in developing. It also gives them time to settle in to the project and see how their ideas may fit in. The Project Leader is also able to say how they feel the money could be spent and highlight the present needs. These discussions lead to a joint decision being made which is then communicated to SOSAEC HAITI. At this point the money will be transfered to the project and in most cases volunteers have the opportunity to implement their ideas, equipment, resources etc while on placement. There are however  times, especially with shorter placements where this is not possible.
It is important that during these discussions, volunteers share their specific skills and interets with Project leaders to ensure they are able to put them to good use while on placement.

SOSAEC HAITI DOES provide:
- The opportunity for you to choose how your money is spent and see the
difference it makes while you are there
- Support and contact before your travel
- The flexibility for volunteers to work from 4 – 52 weeks a year
- No restrictions on when you can volunteer – you choose your dates and we
arrange placements around you. If you wish to be in a group please contact us for
details of other volunteer dates
 -Transport to/from your placement

SOSAEC HAITI does NOT provide:

While you are away
Volunteers are expected to get involved in all aspects of community life within and around their placement. They are expected to be respectful of the culture they are in at all times and remember they are representatives of their own country. Volunteers are encouraged to build friendships with people involved at the projects but are expected to keep these within professional boundaries. While SOSAEC HAITI encouarges future communication, volunteers must ensure this is done appropriately and that future visits and donations are done through SOSAEC HAITI.
  What We Do
SOSAEC HAITI  recruits and places foreign volunteers with in schools, churches, villages, hospitals and other places in Haiti. Through our volunteer  program, we aim to build the capacities of our organization and raise awareness around the world about the successes and challenges of life in Haiti.
Many local organizations lack the money and skills to grow themselves. With our program in place, our partner organizations are overcoming some of the more serious challenges they face. ining courses),  and lack of up to date knowledge ( English language ).

Why We Do It
While working with SOSAEC HAITI, volunteers learn about the real situation at the grassroots level .  Wages are low, In spite of this, Haitians are some of the most welcoming, friendly, and open people in Haiti. Volunteers become part of the family, learning about the local culture: how to cook, how to speak the language, how to sit peacefully with their neighbors and talk about life in general. We hope that volunteers take that knowledge home with them, spreading the word about Haiti development issues and culture around the world.
Projects
Help Children and Communities
We have work with communities, orphanages and schools. Some of these placements focus exclusively on teaching primary or secondary school. Others include both teaching and community outreach components. Please inform us if you wish to teach, do outreach work, or a combination of both,
Volunteers in the Community Teaching program provide arts and crafts, structured play, music/singing, sports, health, and academics at the primary or secondary level. Volunteers are needed in local schools to give students an alternate learning experience.  The main focus is to provide children with a loving, creative and interactive environment in which to flourish.
Volunteers choose which subjects and age groups to teach upon arrival. They work independently to plan lessons using government curriculum and textbooks. Please be aware that there are few (if any) resources available at school. Volunteers should bring any supplies, teaching materials, or instruments they wish to make use of. This is a challenging but amazing program for volunteers with experience organising children, such as camp counsellors, day care workers, and people who love children. Bring your games, songs, and enthusiasm to the community!
School terms  are likely to be: september to june.
Volunteers in the Community Outreach program join in on the work of host organizations. Volunteer activities include home visiting, handicraft marketing, light construction, micro-finance administration, designing educational materials, conducting seminars, and maintaining wells and other community infrastructure. A Community Outreach placement is particularly appropriate for volunteers with great ideas and enthusiasm for grassroots development. This is a real opportunity for deep cultural exchange.

Public Health Improvement
We place volunteers in different churches provide public health services to  children, youth and adults. Volunteers work alongside Haitian counselors and are engaged in a combination of the following activities:
Village Outreach:
Public speaking and mentoring in rural communities respecting HIV prevention and AIDS care, malaria, hygiene, family planning, reproductive health, nutrition, early childhood feeding, and sanitation. This is the most important and most common volunteer activity. Volunteers travel to a variety of community to do this work. They design their own seminars based on pre-determined subject matter. Basic training and educational materials are provided by the host organization.
Secondary School Outreach:
Public speaking and mentoring of youth about teen issues. These may include drug and alcohol abuse, pregnancy, STDs, sexual education, and decision-making. Volunteers visit schools speaking directly to students about issues affecting them. Again, volunteers design their own speeches, but are given basic training and access to educational materials in order to prepare themselves.
Professional Healthcare: (Health Education)
Volunteers with medical background take part in clinic duty, treating and immunizing local people. There is also work available at a training centre for nurse aids. Volunteers teach nursing skills to adult students and help with curriculum development and lesson planning. Volunteers are needed for their skills as health centres are underfunded and lack qualified staff.
Volunteers take part in a flexible schedule, which includes some or all activities offered by the program. The exchange of ideas, experiences, and culture is encouraged. This project requires walking long distances in the sun.

house and feed needy children and orphans. Volunteers are involved in arts and crafts, structured play, music/singing, sports, health, and academics. Volunteers are needed in local primary schools to give students an alternate learning experience.  Our main focus is to provide children with a loving, creative, interactive environment in which to flourish.

Please be aware that there are few (if any) resources available at school. Volunteers should bring any supplies, teaching materials, or instruments they wish to make use of.
Volunteers may choose to work in a local residential home for special needs children. Main activities include structured play, story time, feeding, physical therapy, and teaching basic colours and numbers.

CHURCH outreach and Developmetal projects are also done.
