Volunteers usually meet with the Project Leaders during their first 2 days in order to discuss how would ideally like their money to be used. This allows volunteers to voice individual interests they have or specific areas they would like to be involved in developing. It also gives them time to settle in to the project and see how their ideas may fit in. The Project Leader is also able to say how they feel the money could be spent and highlight the present needs. These discussions lead to a joint decision being made which is then communicated to SOSAEC HAITI. At this point the money will be transfered to the project and in most cases volunteers have the opportunity to implement their ideas, equipment, resources etc while on placement. There are however times, especially with shorter placements where this is not possible.
It is important that during these discussions, volunteers share their specific skills and interets with Project leaders to ensure they are able to put them to good use while on placement.
SOSAEC HAITI DOES provide:
- The opportunity for you to choose how your money is spent and see the
difference it makes while you are there
- Support and contact before your travel

Volunteers are expected to get involved in all aspects of community life within and around their placement. They are expected to be respectful of the culture they are in at all times and remember they are representatives of their own country. Volunteers are encouraged to build friendships with people involved at the projects but are expected to keep these within professional boundaries. While SOSAEC HAITI encouarges future communication, volunteers must ensure this is done appropriately and that future visits and donations are done through SOSAEC HAITI.
What We Do SOSAEC HAITI recruits and places foreign volunteers with in schools, churches, villages, hospitals and other places in Haiti. Through our volunteer program, we aim to build the capacities of our organization and raise awareness around the world about the successes and challenges of life in Haiti. Many local organizations lack the money and skills to grow themselves. With our program in place, our partner organizations are overcoming some of the more serious challenges they face. ining courses), and lack of up to date knowledge ( English language ). Why We Do It While working with SOSAEC HAITI, volunteers learn about the real situation at the grassroots level . Wages are low, In spite of this, Haitians are some of the most welcoming, friendly, and open people in Haiti. Volunteers become part of the family, learning about the local culture: how to cook, how to speak the language, how to sit peacefully with their neighbors and talk about life in general. We hope that volunteers take that knowledge home with them, spreading the word about Haiti development issues and culture around the world. |

This is the most important and most common volunteer activity. Volunteers travel to a variety of community to do this work. They design their own seminars based on pre-determined subject matter. Basic training and educational materials are provided by the host organization. Secondary School Outreach: Public speaking and mentoring of youth about teen issues. These may include drug and alcohol abuse, pregnancy, STDs, sexual education, and decision-making. Volunteers visit schools speaking directly to students about issues affecting them. Again, volunteers design their own speeches, but are given basic training and access to educational materials in order to prepare themselves. Professional Healthcare: (Health Education) Volunteers with medical background take part in clinic duty, treating and immunizing local people. There is also work available at a training centre for nurse aids. Volunteers teach nursing skills to adult students and help with curriculum development and lesson planning.
